A new National Nature Reserve has been created covering 780 hectares of former coalfields at Wigan and Leigh.

An historic expanse of former coal mines in Wigan and Leigh has today been recognised for its importance for nature and the local community.

A project to revive grasslands is adding life and colour to Wigan and playing a part in reversing the biodiversity crisis.
