Photography Competition Results – June 2024

Ken Hayes

The theme for June’s photography competition was 'Butterflies and Moths', and we have received some beautiful entries.

The colder temperatures and wetter days have meant that butterflies and moths have been a bit more difficult to find than usual for this time of year. However, our beady eyed photographers have managed to capture some truly beautiful photographs of these delicate creatures.

From the vibrant colours of red admirals and peacock butterflies to the distinct and intricate details of orange tips and peppered moths, we have received a whole selection of butterflies and moths.

Unfortunately, our judges can only pick one winner, a task that was extremely difficult this month as we received so many amazing entries.

The winner of June’s photography competition is… Ken Hayes!

Orange Tip

Ken Hayes

The way that Ken has managed to capture this orange tip as it feeds on this flower, is spectacular!  Our judges loved how the intricate details of this butterfly from its wings to its face, are so clear to see. This alongside, the composition of the images as this delicate creature perches on the flower to feed made this image a clear winner in our judge’s eyes.

Peppered Moth

Kathryn Halfpenny

Second place goes to Kathryn Halfpenny and this incredible image of a peppered moth. We loved how she captured the speckled black and white wings that gives this incredible moth its name. The contrast of these beautiful wings against the white wall background really highlights this stunning moths’ features.

Large Heath Butterfly

Janet Packham

Finally, third place is awarded to Janet Packham with this beautiful large heath butterfly. Our judges loved the composition of this image. The way that she captured the detail of this incredible butterfly against the vibrant colours of the grass is just wonderful to see.

A huge thank you to everyone who sent in their wonderful images! To see all the incredible entries we received, please take a look at the album below. The winner will be contacted via email with details of how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize.
