February photography competition results

In spite of the somewhat changeable weather this February, our brand new photography competition has burst into life with some fabulous entries demonstrating that whatever the conditions, all of our 42 resplendent reserves are always alive with an abundance of spectacular wildlife.

With our new photography competition launching this month, it was wonderful to see over 60 entries submitted from right across our diverse range of nature reserves. These marvellous submissions truly demonstrate the outstanding natural beauty and breathtaking diversity of wildlife within them.

Our judge had an extremely difficult time choosing from the superb array of images, commenting that all of the entries encapsulated the spirit of the brief and demonstrated the natural splendour of our reserves during the winter months.

However, after much deliberation Philip McDonough’s ‘Little Egret with Fish’, taken at Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve was chosen as the winner of this month’s competition.

Our judge commented that, "The outstanding depth and movement captured within this image is astounding. Moreover, the presence and timing required to capture this spectacular moment in nature demonstrates a remarkable level of skill and aptitude which truly deserves recognition."

Menacing Sparrow Hawk

Charlie Lowe 

In second place is Charlie Lowe’s ‘Menacing Sparrowhawk’ from Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve. Our judge noted that, "The eye-catching colour which exudes from this image makes it really stand out from the crowd. In addition, this photograph beautifully exhibits the power and presence of this remarkable bird of prey."

Winter Sun Reflection

John Barton

Finally, in third place is John Barton’s ‘Winter Sun Reflection’ taken at Brockholes Nature Reserve. Our judge absolutely adored this image, and stated that, "The detail captured within this picture reflects the majestic beauty of these magnificent creatures. Furthermore, the reflection exhibited within this image provides a depth and composition which superbly highlights the noble nature of this resplendent young swan."

The winner will be contacted via email with details on how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize. Additionally, all winner’s photos will be displayed within our visitor centres, for everyone to see.
