Supporter Story - Conservation team take on Morecambe Bay

Danny Myers

Walking 9 miles along Morecambe Bay from Arnside to Grange Lorna, Fiona, Danny and Becky took on a fundraising challenge to Step Up for Wildlife!

Team Lancashire Wildlife Trust

This summer, members of our Conservation team took on the challenge of walking 9 miles along Morecambe Bay, led by a guide from Guide Over Sands Trust, all in aid of our Step up for Wildlife appeal. The team consisted of Lorna, our Senior Brockholes Reserve Officer, Fiona, our Head of Land Management and Danny, our Mere Sands Wood Reserve Officer. Danny was joined by his partner Becky, and together the 4 of them took on this incredible challenge!

Whilst walking the team endured extra challenges with the baking heat of walking 7 of the miles in barefoot across the mud and sand. However the team were continuously motivated by the support around them as well as seeing so many people being adventurous during their journey.

Lorna's Story

Lorna works on our very own Brockholes Nature Reserve and she  is a pivotal part of the positive work the trust achieves. Managing habitats to reach optimum condition for wildlife is complex. Lorna's team have adapted to these challenges, using our conservation longhorn cattle to assist them with some practical reserve management! The team's hard work, alongside the dedication of many volunteers, means visitors can enjoy the reserves and get closer to nature everyday. Lorna was inspired to Step up for Wildlife because she knows how important this connection to wildlife is and wanted to protect our special places for years to come.

Fiona is our Head of Land Management, and her passion to protect the wild places across Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside was her inspiration to fundraise. The wildlife in our region is extremely special and Morecambe Bay is a fabulous place to showcase this. Fiona had wanted to complete a bucket list style challenge for a long time, and linking this cross bay walk to our appeal fundraising efforts gave her the motivation to finally tick it off her list.

Wildlife is and will always be at the centre of Fiona's being and it is her hope that everyone will share the same passions as her, before it becomes too late.

Danny and Becky's Story

Danny Myers

Danny and Becky are both keen explorers, and wanted to turn their hobbies into a way to protect our local wildlife and the environment they know and love. They have both worked and volunteered for conservation charities, meaning our Step up for Wildlife appeal is a cause close to their hearts.

By sharing their personal connections to nature and the reasons they were inspired to fundraise in aid of our appeal, they were overwhelmed by the generosity and support of people responding to their stories.

The team all remarked that they had a great feeling of community, and that they enjoyed taking on a challenge they had never done before, including barefoot trekking through the sea!

One of the highlights definitely had to be the osprey which flew overhead. It was a fitting reminder of the spectacular wildlife that we were trying to raise money for, as well as a symbol of hope for the future.
