Broad-leaved helleborine by Philip Precey

We need YOU to join our helleborine hunt to help us map and identify these beautiful plant species. Part of the orchid family, we need to know which types are growing in our region, and where, to help inform our projects

Helleborine Hunt 19th August – 2nd September

This August, we are asking you to help us find Helleborines in Bolton, Greater Manchester and Mersey Gateway.

Helleborines are wildflowers and are part of the Orchid family. They can be found in damp woodlands, grasslands and dunes from July-September.

How will this help us

This will help us with our Wet Willow Wildlife Project. The project aims to improve wet woodlands in Bolton, Greater Manchester and the Mersey Gateway. Your information will allow us to see where Helleborines are in the project area and inform our conservation efforts. You can find out more about the Wet Willow Project here

How to record your helleborine sightings

Please take a picture of the whole plant, its flower and leaves.

If you find multiple of the same helleborines in the same location, let us know how many you have found (don't worry, we don't need pictures of every helleborine in the group, just a few will do!).

Unsure on the species? Take photos anyway and submit through the form so we can ID the helleborine you have found.

Please complete a new form for each individual, or group, of helleborines you find. Your time is appreciated on this! We ask for your email address in case we need further information from you, and we adhere strictly to GDPR guidelines when processing your details.

Please be careful when out and about, be aware of your surroundings. If you find any helleborines please leave them where you find them. Do not pick them or damage them, they are species that are enjoyed by many so let others enjoy them too. Happy Helleborine Hunting!

Survey Form

Please submit the form by Monday 2nd September.
