They might come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but the butterflies and moths of Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside have more in common than you might think. For example, did you know that the patterns and colours on these insects' wings are made by thousands of tiny, delicate, overlapping scales?
It was wonderful to see the beauty of these creatures captured in the entries to our June photography competition, 'Butterflies and Moths'. From fuzzy speckled wood butterflies to vibrant cinnabar moths, our judge loved looking through your images.
It goes without saying that it was extremely difficult to choose this month's winner, but after much deliberation we chose Ken Hayes’ ‘Meadow Brown Butterfly’ as the winning image.
