People's Postcode Lottery, Charity of the Week - What a year!

We are thrilled that this week, we are the People's Postcode Lottery's charity of the week. PPL has helped fund many projects within the Wildlife Trust, one of which is the wonderful Forest Schools.

Hello there,

My name is Trisha McGlynn and I work as a Forest School Project Officer at Lancashire Wildlife Trust, based at Brockholes Nature Reserve in Preston.

We are extremely proud that the Wildlife Trusts are People’s Postcode Lottery’s charity of the week. It gives us an opportunity to share with you all the wonderful work we have been able to undertake thanks to support from players, including delivering Forest School programmes within inner city settings in Liverpool and Manchester, supporting setting staff with their Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification and assisting with the development of their outside spaces to promote learning and wildlife.

This past year, many of us have had our world’s turned upside down and we’ve been unable to take part in the activities we enjoy or connect with the people we care most about. Funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery allowed the Trust to continue engaging with children, young people, adults and families during a time that it was needed the most. Many individuals found solace in green spaces, whether that be local parks or gardens, and we were able to encourage people to visit these spaces via online sessions.

Now that lockdown seems to be slowly lifting and I am back at work I couldn’t be happier. It’s been fantastic to re-connect with the school staff and children again. The trainees have all been studying hard to gain their Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification and I am excited to be able to support them during their journey.

This week the children have requested a variety of activities and are looking forward to sharing them with you all.

We will be going in search of bugs with magnifying glasses and bug pots on Tuesday. On Wednesday we are planning to play Capture the Flag wearing home made willow crowns. The fire will be burning on Thursday for a lovely session where the children will be learning about natural dyes, and trying out tie dying on fabric squares

During this time of uncertainty, funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery has allowed us to support staff and children within schools in Manchester and Liverpool. We facilitate children’s curiosity in the world around them and assist with their learning, investigating, testing and discovery. They access risk and challenges whilst playing in the woodland or green spaces within school grounds.

Support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery enables inner city children, who may have access to limited green spaces, the chance to explore and the freedom to be. The sessions promote self-confidence, emotional intelligence and resilience; skills that will stay with them into adulthood. The opportunity for learners to lead their own learning, go at their own pace and take part in activities rich in natural resources is one of the unique experiences offered at Forest School for the children.

Keep checking in with us this week for updates from the trainees and children at Forest School within Manchester.
