Bolton MPs keen to support wildlife

Today Lancashire Wildlife Trust welcomed Bolton’s three Members of Parliament for a discussion on the role of nature in improving health, protecting landscapes, and supporting local communities.

Kirith Entwistle MP (Bolton North East), Yasmin Qureshi MP (Bolton South & Walkden), and Phil Brickell MP (Bolton West) were invited for a discussion at the Pavilion Café in Queen’s Park, which we manage alongside Moss Bank Park’s Café.

The conversation focused on three key areas: the health benefits of nature, landscape recovery in the West Pennine Moors and nature-friendly development.

David Dunlop, our Policy & Advocacy Officer, says: “We had a very constructive discussion around how access to nature is having real health benefits at our Bolton Nature & Wellbeing hub.

“We also touched on how our landscape recovery work in the West Pennine Moors not only restores their attractiveness for wildlife, locals and visitors, but also secures income for marginal farmers, captures carbon and holds back floodwater.”

A further discussion point was how nature’s recovery can be incorporated into developments.

The MPs agreed to help to raise the profile of social prescribing at national and local level and to lobby the Environment Secretary to ensure the national funding for our work in the West Pennines can continue.

David added: “We’re glad that our local MPs are so engaged with the importance of nature in improving public health and protecting our landscapes.

“Their support will be invaluable as we work to ensure these initiatives continue to benefit both people and wildlife across Bolton.”

Looking ahead, the MPs are eager to see these projects in action, with plans to visit our nature reserves soon.
