This year, as part of International Women's Day, we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate a few of the incredible women working to make the world that little bit more wild. In this interview, Fiona Whitfield, Head of Land Management, shares her story.

What does your role involve?

My role as Head of Land Management is to provide strategic direction and leadership to the reserves team. I work with the team to make sure we are legally compliant with our obligations internally and externally, in areas such as land tenure, animal health and welfare, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE).

How long have you worked for The Wildlife Trust?

I have worked at The Trust for 19 years.

What did you do before?

I worked as a Ranger for Wycombe District Council, this involved working on nature reserves carrying out practical management and working with volunteers.

What made you want to work in the environmental sector?

I have always had an affinity with wildlife and conservation and always had aspirations to work in this sector. I have never worked in another sector and cannot imagine doing so. Everyone in the sector is working towards the same goal so that makes it a very enjoyable sector to work in.

Working with the team to achieve their ambitions on the nature reserves and helping the team to make sure they can do the best job they can.

What are the major challenges in your role?

Land management has so many elements the challenge is changing hats, sometimes minute to minute, on a daily basis to ensure everything runs smoothly.

What advice would you give to women interested in working in a similar job to you?

My job gives me a lot of purpose and personal satisfaction. When I tell people what I do they usually say ‘ that is an amazing job’ which it is. It is hard work but very rewarding. My advice would be to follow your passion and take every opportunity that is offered with positivity. Enjoy every day.
